Montgomery, Texas, United States

History of Montgomery

The area started as a trading post around 1826, predating its official founding. W.W. Shepperd established Montgomery in 1837 and became the first county seat of Montgomery County, the third formed in the Republic of Texas. Montgomery claims the title of “Birthplace of the Texas Flag.” Resident Charles B. Stewart is credited with designing early versions of the Texas Republic’s flag. Montgomery flourished as a trade centre for he surrounding agricultural area. The 1850s saw a building boom, with some of those historic structures still standing today. The arrival of the railroad bypassed Montgomery in favour of Conroe, leading to a decline in political and economic importance. Conroe became the new county seat in 1889.
