History: 

This area was acquired by Luke Bonesteel and John Tipton in 1820. In honor of Tipton, Tiptona was first called Tiptona.

When the town was renamed in 1821, it was called Columbus. A city was incorporated in Columbus in 1864. Columbus became Indiana’s first railroad hub in 1844 when it reached Madison from Columbus. Growth was spurred further in the 1850s with the arrival of three new railroads.
