History:
A town named Wilmington was laid out in 1815 in hopes of benefiting from a canal along the Killbuck Valley. There were still plans to build a canal branch in Lafayette in 1836 despite the birth of a new town on the other side of Killbuck Creek. Marquis de Lafayette, a French military officer, named the city. The last section of Holmesville was platted in 1848 by Peter Painter. The two parts of town, originally separate, gradually merged over time. After years of planning, Holmesville was incorporated as a village in 1892.
